2022-2023 Ontario Ethics Bowl
Since its inception, the Ontario Ethics Bowl has been organized by the Philosophy Department at the University of Toronto and its satellite campuses. The first Ontario Bowl took place in March 2020 at the University of Toronto, Mississauga (one week before Covid was declared a pandemic!). For the last two years, the OEB was moved online, a fact for which the downsides are obvious and the upsides unexpected. Moving the competition to the virtual world created an interesting hibernation period for the Bowl. It was a time during which, due to travel restrictions, schools and judges from around the province were able to participate from the comfort of their homes. Extreme growth occurred during these last two years, with the size of the Bowl doubling, and then tripling, in back-to-back years.
Obvious is the fact that the Ontario Ethics Bowl has become bigger than any one institution. To reflect the level of diversity already present in the number of schools, volunteers, and judges, the University of Toronto, Mississauga, and its associated campuses, is starting a partnership with other institutions. This partnership will see each institution reflected in the branding of the Bowl, the physical location of the annual Ontario Championships, and the creation of a Steering Committee to guide the Bowl into the future.
The Philosophy Department at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, will continue to direct the ongoing procedural elements of the Ethics Bowl competition, especially in terms of communicating with teams, coaches, judges, and volunteers.
A list of the current (more coming soon) partners includes: the Universities of Toronto (St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough), Toronto Metropolitan, Guelph, McMaster, Queens, and Carleton.
Regardless of who the host institution is, each partner serves as an official sponsor of the Bowl every year.
The University of Toronto Mississauga will host the 2022-2023 Ontario Ethics Bowl on March 4-5.
The location for the 2023-2024 Ontario Ethics Bowl has yet to be decided.
